Consciousness Revolution: Transpersonal Discoveries That Are Changing the World
Moscow, June 23 - 27, 2010

Tour to Tuva

Tuva is a mysterious and beautiful place. The nature has generously gifted republic Tuva with serene beauty. This rather small area  has almost all climatic zones: from tundra to desert. It is a place of amazing contrasts. People in the north breed deer, in the south – camels. Here  you never know what to expect in the next moment: virgin nature, pure air, fantastic colours, different people and their ancient  culture, music, shamanic rituals and ceremonies.

Tuva is a different world.

During our trip you will be able to look behind a closed door into a  surprising new world, full of spirits and mysteries. here you can forget about traffic jams, city crowds, coffee houses, restaurants, latest news and mobile phones.

Tuva is a birthplace of an ancient culture, with its original language, authentic ethos and co-existence of shamanism and buddhism. During the trip we will be accompanied by hereditary shamans of Tuva. They will perform rituals in sacred places, near lakes, and mountain sources. They will give us a glimpse of  shamanic ancient knowledge and tell us about siberian shamanism.

From Abakan the group goes to the Valley of Tsars, where there are about 30 sepulchral barrows from the 3rd and 4th century BC. The Big Salbyksky barrow is the culmination of the travel. It was built over a tomb of a notable Tagarsk family and was found by archeologists in 1954—56. It has a circle of 0.5 km and height of 11.5 m, and the weight of the vertically standing stones reaches 60 tons. Shamanic Khakass ritual. Returning to Abakan. Supper. Concert of Khakass folklore ensemble (for an additional fee).

* Hotel check-in, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 2 (7/4/2010) — Trip to Tuva

Breakfast. Program begins in the village of Shushensky. Excursion to the state ethnographic memorial estate «Shushensky». It will be an amazing experience, a cheerful group adventure to a real Siberian village from the 19th to 20th centuries. We will visit a tavern (with a surprise), a current merchant shop, and will get acquainted with the skills of local handicraftsmen. Tea drinking in a Siberian log hut with traditional Siberian entertainment. Arrival to the village of Tanzybej. Hospitable owners will meet us with pies and drinks. Owners will invite us into their house, show us domestic constructions, and will acquaint us with rural life. Dinner in a rural house will be serving Siberian cuisine. Departure to Tuva. The way lies through the mountains of Western Sajana after which, as believed many years ago, there is the world’s end. End of the world or not, the landscape is incredible, and it is impossible to look away from the bus windows. In the evening the group arrives to Tuva. It is amazing that as soon as the bus crosses the republic border, even the landscape changes. It seems that you are on another planet and in a different time. Throughout most of Tuva there are no signs of a modern civilization and the steppes last for many kilometers. Visiting the well-known barrow «Arzhan-II» which was excavated in 2000—2003 by experts of the Hermitage in cooperation with the German Archaeological Institute. The treasures found in a barrow (more than 20 kg of gold products) became a real sensation in the archaeological world.

Arrival to the hotel, check in, rest, supper.

* Hotel check-in, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 3 (7/5/2010) — Meeting with shamans

After breakfast, an excursion across Kyzyl, the capital of Tuva. Visiting the geographical centre of Asia — a symbol of Kyzyl and the most attractive sight of the city. It was built in 1964, this obelisk represents the big sphere and, as on a world globe, the contours of the continents are shown, with Tuva especially noted and Kyzyl specified. Visiting a Buddhist monastery, where it is possible to hear the sermon of the llama, visiting the Republican Museum of Regional Studies of Tuva and an exhibition called «Gold of Scythians,» and a sightseeing tour (for an additional fee). A special attraction of the collection are products from a barrow of Arzhaan-II. The well-known «Scythian Gold,» having visited numerous Europe exhibitions, returned home in 2008. Dinner at a local restaurant. The possibility of meeting with a pearl of Tuvan shamanism — Mongush Borahoevichem Kenin-Lopsangom (a Doctor of Historical Sciences, the patriarch of shamanism and the lifelong president of the Tuvan shamans). Mongush Kenin-Lopsan the recipient of the award «Live treasure of the world» of the American Fund of Shamanistic Researches. In the entire world only three persons have been awarded this honor. The main part of the day program will be visiting shamanic clinics, meeting with shamans, and an introduction to the practice of Tuvan shamanic rituals and ceremonies. Shamanic rituals are mainly performed for the healing of people, sometimes in connection with failures, etc. Shamans are very concrete and will not perform rituals in an abstract manner, without a specific goal. It’s possible to experience an individual healing session for an additional payment of 1500 rubles. Departure to a yurt complex, «Bij-hem» and then to supper. Evening shamanic ritual. Returning to the hotel.

* Hotel, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 4 (7/6/2010) — Shamanic ritual

Check-out after breakfast. We will leave a part of our baggage in a «left-luggage» office and go in a southern direction (120 km) to Lake Chagytaj, on the way visiting a monument to a nomad. A meeting with a local shaman and the continuation of the program accompanied by the shaman. Chagytaj is one of the deepest and greatest fresh lakes of the Tuva hollow. Its pure waters lay in a deep bowl at bottom of northern slope of a ridge of Tannu-Oola at a height of 1003 meters above sea level. Its area is 2,860 hectares. Coast Chagytaja, a stony and sandy area, stretches on for almost 20  kilometers. There are willows, birches, and larches growing only in the southeast part of the coastal marsh. Arrival in a taiga zone, the organization of a small tent town, rest, supper, evening fire. A nighttime Shamanic ceremony. Ritual of a gift to spirit — to the keeper of a source. The shamanic ceremony is connected with the achievement of two purposes: ceremonies of treatment, and cult ceremonies such as, a cult of fire, mountains, the sacred trees, or separate patrimonial patrons. All shamanic ceremonies have approximately the same identical scheme: (1) clarification; (2) calling of corresponding spirits; (3) search of an etiology or cult consecration; (4) exile of hostile spirits; (5) guessing about a ritual outcome or about the destiny of the people presented; (6) leaving of the shaman. With the sound of a tambourine the shaman will cry out and will imitate the sounds of ravens or cuckoos. These birds give the shaman the capability to compose a song. Then the shaman sits down with his back to the fire, silently, and then gradually taps on a tambourine and has a conversation with Eerenami (spirit guide). This will either expel evil ghosts, or the shaman will say that the position is hopeless. Either way this provides gifts to spirits. For this purpose the shaman sprays a special shovel of milk on four «parts of the world» and then burns meat and bread slices in a fire.

* Setting up in a small tent town, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 5 (7/7/2010) — Shamanism secrets

After breakfast the group will go to Lake Chagotaj (30 km). The group will spend the day at the lake. On the bank of the lake the shaman will provide a seminar devoted to the attributes of shamanic clothes and the making of shamanic amulets. After an open-air dinner we will rest, then go for a walk and bathe. In the evening the shaman will demonstrate secrets of fortune telling on stones.

* Staying at small tent town, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 6 (7/8/2010) — Lake Svatikovo

After breakfast the group leaves (45 km) to a natural curative water source of Argolik. This source is interesting because its water has few salts, however its medical properties are well-known by the population and doctors of Tuva. Seminar. A picnic/dinner in nature. Then the group heads to Lake «Dus-Hol» (to Svatikovo, 90 km). Here the group will be able to admire a miniature «desert zone» and be able to lie down on the hot sand. The lake is famous for its medicinal properties. Everyone will rest and see that the curative properties of this lake are greater than that of De the ad Sea in Israel or Tuz lakes in Khakassia. Water mineralization in Dus-Hole is very high, up to 280 g/l. Participants will take pleasure in resting on the lake shore. In the evening the group will travel to Kyzyl, taking their baggage from the hotel, moving to a yurt complex, and having supper.

Performance of traditional Tuvan throat singing — «khoomei.» It is an amazing ability of Tuvinians and some other Siberian people to simultaneously create sounds of various tonalities for 25—30 seconds. If you close your eyes, it is very difficult to believe that these sounds come from a person, and not from a musical instrument.

* Yurt check-in, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 7 (7/9/2010)  «Argaan Shivilig»

After a breakfast and check-out, the group will leave their baggage in a «left-luggage» office, and depart in the western direction to the mineral springs on Tuvan «Argaan Shivilig» (420 km). In translation this means «the holy water, mineral water, a curative source». We will stop at the majestic mountain Hajyrakan. This one of the most sacred and esteemed places in Tuva. In 1992 it has been chosen as an energetically strong place. It was consecrated by the Dalaj Llama XIV. At least once a year local shamans come here to give respect to ancestors, to make ancient rituals, to strengthen and clear spirit, and to recharge their energy. We will participate in a ceremony at mountain Hajrakan. The dinner will take place on a grassy area, in the company of the «Seven sisters» — century old larches growing from one root. Arrival to the spring, supper, and an evening fire.

* Setting up in a small tent town, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 8 (7/10/2010)  Shamanic seminar

Attending a Shamanic seminar

* Staying in a small tent town, breakfast, dinner, and supper

Day 9 (7/11/2010)  The Tuva heritage

Breakfast, gathering of group and departure to Kyzyl (420 км), on the way the group will visit the centre of Buddhist culture, the destroyed temple of Ustuu-Huree. The temple became an outstanding example of Buddhist building in Tuva. There is nothing similar to this in all of the former Soviet Union. This type of building is only seen in Tuva. In 1930 after the acceptance of a special decision Ustuu-Huree was closed, and in 1937 it was destroyed. In 1999, the government of Russia, recognizing the historical and architectural value of the unique temple of Ustuu-Huree, made a decision to restore it. The idea to restore Ustuu-Huree was supported by musicians. In Chadane they organize an annual festival of live music of «Ustuu-Huree,» thereby drawing attention, together with means for restoration of a temple and training of lamas. We will have a dinner/picnic on the way. On the road we will stop at mountain Syyn-churek, local residents call it «Maral heart.» You will see, how archeologists copy rock drawings on paper for further study. It is possible to take a copy of the turned out drawings as a rare souvenir. Ascending the mountain, Syyn-churek, from which a beautiful scenic view can be seen. Arrival at the yurt complex. Supper (special dishes from the Tuvan kitchen will be prepared for us). During supper each participant will receive a certificate for the trip/seminar attendance.

* Hotel/Yurt check-in, breakfast, dinner, and supper
